August 2009 Update on the 2008 College Scholarship Recipients

Michael Hull
We were thrilled to have Michael come back and attend the 2009 scholarship reception. He is transferring this fall from Ball State to Virginia Tech, the same school that Clayton Miller, our 2009 recipient will be attending. Michael stated that the transfer was due to the fact that Virginia Tech has a business curriculum better suited to his needs. Michael spent the summer working and playing rugby with the Washington Renegades.

Danny MartinelliSome words from Danny
I am very honored to have been one of the first recipients of Team DC's Student-Athlete Scholarship last year. But most importantly, I am very excited to see this year's candidate, Clayton Miller, receive the same award. Our community needs to acknowledge those that are making a difference and achieving dreams that are coming true! I am very disappointed, however, that I was unable to attend the scholarship ceremony this year. I was committed to present at a National Down Syndrome State Convention, in Charlottesville, as an advocate where almost 350 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities were fighting for their special education rights, in addition to the special needs bills that were being presented to legislators from the General Assembly to assure that every human being has the opportunity to live a life in peace, happiness, and love. I am currently still attending Marymount University as a third year student studying History Secondary Education. Unfortunately, I have decided to take a break from college swimming this year because I will be studying abroad at the American University of Rome during the Spring 2010 semester. I am very nervous, yet thrilled, to begin this journey to Europe; however, I believe many positive things will come out of this trip. In the meantime, to keep me focused on school and to keep me in shape, I have decided to swim for the District of Columbia Aquatics Club, DC's gay and lesbian swim team. I am expecting to meet new individuals that share the same lifestyle as me and to become a role model for many, both in and out of the water. Again, I want to congratulate this year's recipient and thank Team DC for all their continuous support in their hard efforts to level the playing field in today's world.

Brittany Reynolds—Some words from Brittany
I had a successful freshman year of college at Virginia Commonwealth University, where I continued to play rugby. My team made it to the MARFU (Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union) playoffs and traveled to Shippensburg, PA where we faced the national champion of our division. For my academic achievements, I was inducted into the VCU chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Overall I had a great first year. This year I hold the office of match secretary for my rugby team and have set up the entire Fall 09 season. I'm looking forward to another successful year on and off the field.
