Team DC sat down with Samantha Nolet, volunteer and cheerleader with Cheer DC, to get her thoughts and perspective of what it means to be LGBTQ+ and an active sports team member.
Team DC: How long have you played the sport or participated in the activity of your Team DC member club?
Samantha Nolet: I’ve been with Cheer DC for two years.
TDC: When did you first start playing/participating?
SN: At age 12, I started cheerleading on an All Star team in Fort Myers, FL. Then, went on to be a high school cheerleader and a cheerleader in college for my sorority.
TDC: What advice do you offer LGBTQ+ youth who are interested in your sport/activity?
SN: This is the one sport where we encourage being loud and showing your Pride and spirit in a variety of ways!
TDC: What is your favorite part of being a member of an LGBTQ+ team?
SN: I love meeting new friends and learning about the different backgrounds of each of my teammates. I love that folks from all walks of life can come together and be one solid team!
