Damon Miller joined Adventuring in the late 1980s, served on the Operations Committee in charge of the newsletter, and was one of our active trip leaders from his first hike from Fort Reno to Fort Totten on Columbus Day 2008 until he passed away last year.
His first Arboretum Azaleas Ramble was ten years ago in April 2009. Also that year he led our first 4th of July Hike at Great Falls in Maryland. It was always easy to spot Damon as trip leader since he always wore an orange baseball cap from his alma mater—Princeton University.
But mostly Damon kept up the annual tradition of Columbus Day Hikes (mostly in Rock Creek Park) and spring hike at the National Arboretum. The annual Arboretum Azaleas Ramble is now named in his honor.
Over the years we have lost some other leaders of Adventuring including former Coordinator Richard Krampf (who drowned while swimming in the surf in Rehoboth) and former treasurer Jim Pulcipher. Read more from a 1993 Washington Post article that highlights Richard Krampf’s passion for Adventuring.
