The DC Strokes Rowing Club (DCSRC) is committed to bridging gaps between communities by building an inclusive environment, fostering personal growth and promoting the true spirit of sportsmanship. DCSRC programs offer opportunities for rowers of all experience levels regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, or income. They offer morning or evening workouts and even have a “Learn to Row” program for the person just learning the sport. Today, DCSRC is one of only a handful of dedicated, independent LGBT rowing clubs in the world, along with the Chicago Rowing Union, the San Francisco Bay Blades, and the Melbourne Argonauts in Australia.

Learn to Row
The Learn to Row Program (LTR) is designed for people with no previous rowing experience and teaches the basics from square one. All learn to row sessions include: land training on ergometers, rowing on the water using a training barge and an eight-person rowing shell, personal attention from coaches to help you develop your form and rowing skills, and a question-and-answer session, as well as a review of lessons learned, at the conclusion of each day’s class. Student-to-instructor ratios are 12 to 1 or better to ensure good interaction with coaches.
What Will I Learn?
- Fundamentals of the rowing stroke and body mechanics
- Rowing and equipment terminology
- Correct use of rowing machines, known as ergometers
- How to set a boat and establish correct timing
- Oar blade techniques, including feathering
- Boat safety

DC Strokes Learn to Row course has two parts:
Part I: Learn the Basics
Learn the basics of rowing in this condensed two-week course. Sessions run either Saturday + Sunday mornings (9 am – noon), Saturday + Sunday afternoons (1 – 4 pm), or Monday through Thursday (evenings) 6:15 – 8 pm.
Choose from one of the following Sessions:
Session A: Saturday+Sunday AM (9 am – noon); April 20-21 + April 27-28
Session B: Saturday+Sunday PM (1 – 4 pm); April 20-21 + April 27-28
Session C: Monday-Thursday PM (6:15 – 8 pm); April 15-18 + April 22-25
Session D: Monday-Thursday PM (6:15 – 8 pm); April 29-May 2 + May 6-9
Session E: Monday-Thursday PM (6:15 – 8 pm); May 13-16 + May 20-23 [Pending Demand]
Part II: Transition to the Novice Program
After completing Part I you will transition to rowing with the Novice Program. Your first two weeks of Novice are included in your Learn to Row registration. Classes are held Monday to Thursday, from 6:15-8:00pm. At this conclusion of the 2 week period, you will be able to officially join the Novice Program.
